Since the flow resistance of heavy oil, fuel oil, resins, and other high-viscosity liquids changes significantly as viscosity increases, pumping equipment must ensure that flow rate remains unaffected by changes in liquid viscosity while maintaining stable operation under various operating conditions. Hence, when customers are deciding between the 3RP rotary lobe pump and the KCB series gear pump for conveying high-viscosity liquids, they frequently face a challenging choice. Although both can handle oils and high-viscosity media, their internal structures and operating characteristics differ, making the specific selection of equipment dependent on factors such as the properties of the medium, the required flow rate, and operating conditions.
The 3RP lobe pump employs a rotary working mechanism, utilizing a pair of cam rotors driven by synchronous gears that rotate in opposite directions to achieve suction and discharge through the periodic changes in the volume between the rotors and the pump casing. This design maintains specific clearances within the rotors and between the rotors and the pump chamber, preventing friction between components and ensuring smooth, stable operation during pumping. The higher the viscosity of the pumped medium, the better the gap-filling and sealing performance, allowing volumetric efficiency to remain at a high level as viscosity increases, rendering it effective for industrial systems requiring continuous feeding, recirculating conveyance, or extended operation. The pump body can also be equipped with a thermal insulation jacket to ensure that the material maintains good flowability within the pump chamber, preventing blockages caused by cooling and solidification. Additionally, the operating speed of this equipment is significantly lower than that of the KCB series, resulting in low speed and low pulsation. This makes it exceptionally beneficial for shear-sensitive media such as chemical substances and food sauces, maximizing the protection of the media’s physical and chemical properties from degradation.
KCB gear oil pump operates on the principle of gear meshing, leveraging the rotating meshing action of the gears to displace the fluid, thereby conveying it from the inlet to the outlet. This design offers a simple structure and relatively low procurement costs, making it highly applicable for applications such as lubricant delivery and fuel pressurization, where the medium consists of lubricating oils with a viscosity not exceeding 1,500 cSt and a temperature not exceeding 300°C. When viscosity is too high, the medium struggles to quickly fill the spaces between the gears formed during disengagement, resulting in a significant drop in the pump’s volumetric efficiency and a corresponding reduction in delivery efficiency. Hence, when using this equipment with high-viscosity fluids, one must not rely solely on the pump’s rated flow rate but also consider the inlet pipe diameter, suction length, fluid temperature, and pump speed. If the temperature of heavy oil is too low, resulting in excessively high viscosity, inadequate suction conditions may still cause operational abnormalities, even if the pump itself has a strong pumping capacity.
In the KCB series, shaft-end mechanical seals are prone to increased leakage risks due to heat buildup under high-viscosity, high-temperature operating conditions, and wear on the gears and shaft sleeves can gradually reduce the pump’s output pressure. In contrast, because there is no contact between the rotors in the 3RP series, the primary wear components are concentrated in the synchronous gears and bearings, resulting in fewer wear-prone parts and a lower failure rate. For high-viscosity oils, the KCB gear pump features a proven design and strong pressure-building capability, rendering it well-suited for the efficient handling of heavy oil, fuel oil, and lubricating oil in boiler fuel systems, lubricating oil circulation systems, and oil tank transfer systems. In systems requiring a specific discharge pressure where the medium itself possesses good lubricity, this equipment is often the optimal choice. But when dealing with heavy oil, high-viscosity resins, slurries containing particles, or applications requiring sanitary-grade transfer, the 3RP sanitary lobe pump offers a wider viscosity range, enhanced durability due to its non-contact operation, and low-pulsation, low-shear transfer quality, proving to be a more specialized and reliable solution than gear pumps.
